Harmony Physiotherapy Ottawa physiotherapists have received advanced postgraduate training in the performance of Functional Dry Needling. Richa has also been trained in the unique techniques involved in performing Dry Needling in the Pelvic Floor region by Specialists in the US.
Dry needling involves the penetration of Tight Muscle Trigger Points with a sterile needle in order to provide quick and effective relief from your symptoms. Dry needling is a technique similar to Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) where an acupuncture needle is used to relax tight muscles and stimulate the healing of oversensitive nerves. Its called “dry” because nothing is injected into the body.
Your Harmony Ottawa physiotherapist will perform a thorough examination of your condition to determine if you might be a candidate for FDN.

IMS (Intra-Muscular Stimulation)
IMS also have known as GUNN IMS is a unique assessment and treatment system used commonly for treating chronic pain syndromes. The principles of IMS are a true Canadian invention by past UBC professor and Sports Medicine Specialist Dr. Chan Gunn who after many years of research and development is credited for the creation of the unique IMS system of assessment and treatment.
Dr. Gunn and the iSTOP institute has over the years trained hundreds of physiotherapists and physicians in this unique assessment and treatment system.
The Gunn IMS educational program which is administered by the UBC has very strict admission criteria which are thought to be one of the factors responsible for the scarce amount of Certified IMS practitioners in Ontario.
When clinically indicated, a specific examination is performed to establish if a patient would be a candidate for IMS treatment. Your Harmony Physiotherapy Ottawa Certified IMS physiotherapist will then provide treatment-combining IMS with other research-based treatment strategies to get you better, Faster!

How does Dry Needling, IMS & Acupuncture by Harmony Ottawa Physiotherapist works?
Dry needling, IMS & Acupuncture works on several levels within the body to assist in releasing tight and sore muscles that can be found in common conditions. The technique itself involves the insertion of fine acupuncture needles into taut bands of muscle that contain a knot or “trigger point”. During treatment, patients will generally feel the muscle grab or twitch briefly as the needle hits the target tissue. This feeling is not painful, though is somewhat uncomfortable – but is over within 2-3 seconds! After the target tissue has been released, your Harmony Ottawa Physiotherapist can provide appropriate exercise to maintain proper function and mobility of the area
What conditions can Dry Needling, IMS & Acupuncture help with?
Many common orthopedic conditions can be helped by Dry Needling, including:
Neck pain and stiffness
Repetitive strain injuries (tennis elbow/patellar tendonitis/Achilles tendonitis)
Lower back pain
Is Dry Needling, IMS & Acupuncture only for pain?
No! While Dry Needling, IMS & Acupuncture is often able to offer instant pain relief, the main goal of needling is to allow proper movement and function. When pain is reduced after needling, joint range of motion is improved and proper corrective exercise can be prescribed to patients. Also, there are often times when your therapist will perform Dry Needling, IMS & Acupuncture away from the site of pain, to release adjacent or compensating muscles, which can enable proper body function as a whole and relieve patient pain even faster.
