Is pain after delivery normal?

1 in every 3 Canadian women suffers from pelvic pain during the postpartum period.

After a perfect pregnancy & perfect delivery, there comes pelvic pain. It makes you wonder, what went wrong during pregnancy, or were there any issues during labor or delivery that led to this pain? Is the pain related to the C-section or episiotomy?

The answer to these questions may not be that simple. If postpartum pelvic pain is left unmanaged, it may often become chronic and long-lasting.

Causes of postpartum pelvic pain

There are many causes for postpartum pelvic pain, and some common delivery and pregnancy related causes involve:

· Perineal tearing during delivery

· Episiotomy

· Sprain of pubic symphysis joint

· Tailbone (Coccyx) injury

· Pudendal nerve injury

· SI joint dysfunction

· Prolonged labour

· Scar tissue in the Pelvic floor muscles

These conditions involve the local and surrounding pelvic and connective tissue, and nervous tissue, leading to pelvic pain. Postpartum pelvic pain can affect:

· Bowel movements, leading to constipation or incontinence;

· Urination, leading to constipation or incontinence;

· Uterine function; and

· Sexual function, leading to pain and abnormal vaginal contractions during sex
