Pregnancy and labor can take its toll on your body, and many women suffer from post-natal conditions for some time after birth.

At Harmony Physiotherapy our women’s health Physiotherapists are specialized in treating and providing rehabilitation from pregnancy-related conditions such as episiotomy related pain, pelvic pain, incontinence and prolapse, painful menstruation, cesarean section recovery and even helping you feel confident in yourself and returning to fitness after labor.

At Harmony Physiotherapy, Ottawa our professional and gentle Physiotherapists are fully trained in all areas of women’s health, especially that of post-natal conditions. They have years of experience in assessing women after delivery & in treating women for postnatal conditions for a fast and long-term recovery. A full physical assessment will be carried out at your first appointment to ascertain what areas may be causing you pain. They will answer any of your queries and create a treatment plan specifically tailored to your rehabilitation, consisting of realignment, postnatal exercises and stretching to ensure you make a full recovery.

How can Harmony Physiotherapy Ottawa treatments help pregnancy-related and post-natal conditions?

Our expert Physiotherapist will conduct a physical assessment, and listen to your worries to ensure they tailor an effective and safe treatment plan for your rehabilitation. They will assess your pelvic closure, the lower ribs, sacrum, pubic symphysis, pelvic floor, and abdominal muscles, viscera, back alignment and posture to make sure that nothing goes unchecked.

Why am I suffering from post-natal conditions after labour?

Many women suffer from post-natal conditions after pregnancy that can cause pain and increase uncomfortable sensations. Alongside the stress on your body from pregnancy and labor, new activities such as feeding and carrying your baby will put a strain on different muscles that you may have never felt before. Pregnancy hormones can also impact on your health, as they continue to affect your muscles and ligaments for around 6 months after birth, making them not as strong as they once were, which places pressure and increased risks of injury on other parts of your body.

Our Postnatal Physiotherapy Treatment at Harmony Ottawa

Episiotomy or Tearing Pain – your Physiotherapist will use a mixture of gentle massage techniques to heal and stretch any scars, scar tissue and pelvic muscles. They will also teach you how to massage yourself so that you can continue your treatment at home.

Pelvic Pain and Pain during Intercourse – Pelvic pain, especially during intercourse, can be particularly debilitating for women after giving birth. Using combinations of relaxation and self-massage, with techniques to stretch the muscles of the perineum and pelvis, your Physiotherapist will provide a long term solution for pain relief. She will also help you to develop an awareness of your perineum and ways to relax it and teach you methods to relax your abdominal muscle through respiratory work.

Urinary or Anal incontinence and Prolapse – Our Physiotherapists will provide a treatment program of pelvic floor re-education, using methods of manual rehabilitation, electro-stimulation, and biofeedback. They will also give you advice on lifestyle solutions for incontinence and certain exercises to both avoid post-partum, and ones to practice in between sessions.

Visceral problems and Constipation – the Physiotherapists at Harmony Physio will work on your visceral organs, use K-Taping and provide abdominal massage alongside mobilization techniques around your intestines.

Diastasis abdominal – K-Taping, education about “good abs” and methods of achieving them, alongside intensive abdominal rehabilitation are all techniques that are used by our Physiotherapists in treating diastasis.

Painful Menstruation – our Physiotherapists will mobilize your uterus and pelvic bones using different types of massage to relieve you of pain during menstruation

Back Pain – Physiotherapy treatment will target your posture, and use methods to guide it so that you can get back to your full strength, alongside abdominal rehabilitation exercises, massage, and back rehabilitation techniques.

Respiratory issues (shortness of breath) – Physiotherapy can help to relax your diaphragm and teach you different breathing methods so that you feel much freer and less stressed.

Cesarean Section – by mobilizing and stretching your cesarean scar and the uterine ligaments and uterine walls underneath it, our Physiotherapists can relieve you of uncomfortable sensations and pain. Visceral and abdominal rehabilitation at an early stage alongside education on how to carry your baby after birth will ensure a safe recovery for you

Pain after epidural – manual techniques such as soft and gentle massages, realignment of the body and relieving tension in your uterus muscles will relieve you of pain after your epidural

Going back to the sport – our Physiotherapists are specialized in adapted post-natal  rehabilitation and adapted sport exercises.
